Words of the Week - All About Greed
The 150 year sentence for Super-Con-Artist Bernard Madoff is a wonderful example of HYPERBOLE (obvious exaggeration) because the 71 year old financier is unlikely to live long enough to serve more than a small fraction of that sentence. This draconian sentence certainly sends a message about the court’s reaction to his MERCENARY (motivated by money or gain) behavior. Madoff DUPED (deceived) his investors out of $65 billion. That kind of AVARICE (greed; inordinate desire for wealth) is hard to imagine. Many of his former investors are now INSOLVENT(bankrupt; unable to pay debts).
